For one week every August it has around 85,000, drawn from more than eighty countries, camped across 240 hectares of Schleswig-Holstein farmland behind 45 kilometres of fencing. The arithmetic is the story: the village multiplies itself roughly forty times over, hosts about 200 bands on eight stages, and then goes back to being a village. Wacken Open Air is routinely called the biggest and best-known metal festival in the world, the Mecca of heavy metal, and it started in a gravel pit with a borrowed trailer for a stage.
