Photo credit Município de Vila Boa, CC BY-SA 4.0. There are two Vila Boas in the history of Goiás, and only one of them has a UNESCO plaque. The famous one is Vila Boa de Goyaz, the gold town founded in 1727 by the bandeirante Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva, capital of the captaincy and then the state until the government decamped to purpose-built Goiânia in 1937. It dropped the Vila Boa long ago and is simply called Goiás now; its colonial centre was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2001. This story is about the other one — a municipality in the far northeast of the state, at kilometre 147 of the BR-020, which did not exist in any form until 1960 and whose entire recorded history fits inside a human lifetime.
