Toca da Boa Vista

Most caves are made from the top down. Rain picks up carbon dioxide on its way through the soil, turns mildly acidic, and spends a few hundred thousand years eating a hole in the limestone below. Toca da Boa Vista was made the other way round. The acid came up from underneath, it was sulfuric rather than carbonic, and it was manufactured by microorganisms living in the groundwater. The result, in the dry hills of Campo Formoso in Bahia, is 114 kilometres of passage — the longest cave known in Brazil, and a place almost nobody is allowed to enter.

The Chemistry of an Older Ocean

The rock here is dolomite of the Salitre Formation, part of the Una Group, laid down in the Ediacaran roughly 600 million years ago at the tail end of the Precambrian. That timing matters more than it sounds. The Ediacaran is the moment multicellular life is getting started, and the microorganisms that would later strip phosphorus and sulfur out of seafloor sediment before it hardened into rock did not yet exist.\n\nSo the sediment kept them. The dolomite that formed is unusually rich in phosphorus and sulfur, and that chemistry set up everything that followed. Groundwater moving through the rock freed the sulfur; microorganisms oxidised it into sulfuric acid; the acid dissolved the carbonate around it. Speleologists call this hypogene speleogenesis — cave-making driven from the rock below rather than the atmosphere above. It produces a different shape of cave: less a single trunk river passage than a sprawling three-dimensional maze, which is exactly what surveyors found.

A River of Carcasses

Around twenty thousand years ago, water ran into the cave carrying dead animals with it, and kept doing so long enough to build deposits of bone on a scale that has no real parallel in South American caves. More than fifty thousand bones have been excavated so far.\n\nMuch of it belongs to species that no longer exist. Among the finds is a ground sloth six metres long — an animal that would have browsed the trees of a Bahia far wetter than the one you would fly over today. The bones are not scattered curiosities but a census, a record of what walked and grazed across this landscape at the height of the last glacial period, delivered by a river into a chamber dry enough to keep them. The work is not finished. In 2024, researchers published the first fossil record of a turkey vulture, Cathartes aura, from northeastern Brazil, recovered here.

The Title It Used to Hold

In 1999, the speleologists Augusto Auler and Peter Smart published a paper describing Toca da Boa Vista as the longest known cave in the Southern Hemisphere. They were right at the time. The claim has been repeated ever since, occasionally with some stubbornness, and it is no longer true — the Bullita Cave system in Australia's Northern Territory has been surveyed well past 120 kilometres and now holds that distinction.\n\nWhat Toca da Boa Vista retains is more than enough. At 114 kilometres of mapped passage it is comfortably the longest cave in Brazil and sits among the two dozen or so longest caves on Earth, in a country whose karst is nowhere near as thoroughly explored as that of the United States or Mexico. The survey has grown steadily since the Grupo Bambui de Pesquisas Espeleologicas began systematic work in 1987. There is no particular reason to think it is finished.

Why You Cannot Go In

There is no ticket office and no boardwalk. Toca da Boa Vista lies about 11 kilometres east of the town of Lage dos Negros, in the Campo Formoso municipality on the northern edge of the Chapada Diamantina, and it is closed to casual visitors for reasons that have nothing to do with bureaucracy. The entrances are vertical shafts; getting in requires rope and hardware.\n\nOnce inside, the problem is the air. The cave is brutally hot and brutally dry — nothing like the cool, dripping caverns most people picture — and dehydration in a maze system where a wrong turn costs hours is a serious hazard rather than a theoretical one. It is a working scientific site: a paleontological archive, a natural laboratory for a style of cave formation that was barely recognised when the survey began, and a reminder that the most significant places on a map are not always the ones with a visitor centre.

From the Air

Toca da Boa Vista lies at 10.16 degrees south, 40.86 degrees west, in the municipality of Campo Formoso, Bahia, Brazil, roughly 11 kilometres east of Lage dos Negros on the northern flank of the Chapada Diamantina. Nothing of the cave is visible from the air — the entrances are narrow shafts in scrubland — but the surrounding karst plateau shows as pale, sparsely vegetated terrain with a dry drainage pattern, and the Chapada Diamantina escarpments rise to the south. The nearest significant field is Petrolina (SBPL) about 95 kilometres to the north-northwest, across the Sao Francisco; Salvador (SBSV) lies roughly 350 kilometres to the southeast. This is hot semi-arid country with excellent dry-season visibility from May to October, strong afternoon thermal activity over the plateau, and haze during the November-to-April rains.
