To reach Tibau do Sul from the north you have to load the vehicle onto a ferry and cross Lagoa de Guaraíras, a brackish lagoon rimmed with mangrove that opens to the Atlantic at the town's doorstep. It is the best introduction the municipality offers, because Tibau do Sul is defined less by the beaches it is famous for than by the water behind them — the lagoon, the Rio Catú, and a shallow bay where dolphins come in on the rising tide.
