They were looking for oil. What came up the bore instead was water, and it was hot - not scalding, but warm the way a bath is warm, rising under its own pressure from the Guarani Aquifer, one of the largest reserves of fresh groundwater on Earth, lying beneath four South American countries. In most places that is a disappointing well. In Olímpia, a coffee-and-cattle town in the north of São Paulo state, it turned out to be the most valuable thing anyone had ever pulled out of the ground there. Thermas dos Laranjais opened on that water in 1987, and the town has been rebuilding itself around it ever since.
