      <description><![CDATA[Most coastal towns are named after admirals. This one worked the other way round. In 1859 a naval officer named Joaquim Marques Lisboa asked the emperor for permission to take his brother's remains out of the cemetery at Tamandaré and carry them home. The emperor agreed, and some years later handed Lisboa a title borrowed from the same small place on the Pernambuco coast: Baron of Tamandaré. He rose to marquis, and the Brazilian Navy eventually made him its patron. Which means that every Brazilian warship, in a roundabout way, carries the name of a fishing village 104 kilometres south of Recife, where the reefs break the Atlantic into a line of white and the water behind them goes flat as a floor.]]></description>
