St. Mary's Church, Lübeck: Introduction

They came down on the night of 28 March 1942, when Royal Air Force incendiaries set the Lübeck Marienkirche alight and the seven bells in the tower stood in a furnace of roughly a thousand degrees. Witnesses said they rang once more in the updraught before they fell. Nobody has moved them since. The space around them was consecrated as a Memorial Chapel Against War, and the visitor who has come to see the tallest brick vault in the world meets the wreckage first.
