The boat left Santarém carrying more people than anyone had counted, and that was normal. On the Amazon in 1981 the weekly riverboat was the bus, the mail van, the freight line and the only practical way to travel between towns separated by hundreds of kilometres of water. Passengers came aboard with a hammock under one arm and paid in cash. The Sobral Santos II was making her run upriver to Manaus. At around half past three on the morning of Saturday, 19 September, she swung in toward the wharf at Óbidos - the narrowest and fastest stretch of the whole river - and rolled over. Roughly five hundred people are thought to have been aboard. The captain, Elio Palhares, reported 178 survivors that day. The rest of the arithmetic has never been settled, and probably never will be.
