In December 1842, in the assembly hall at Rendsburg, a grocer from Haderslev named Peter Hiort Lorenzen stood up and spoke Danish. The chamber conducted its business in German, and Lorenzen knew German perfectly well. He kept speaking Danish anyway, session after session. To the German-minded members it was a deliberate insult; to Danish-minded Schleswigers it was the first open victory in a fight they had been losing quietly for years. Within months, his supporters were looking for a hilltop large enough to hold a crowd.
