Eleven thousand years ago, in the sandstone country of what is now southwestern Goiás, an adult man and a child were laid in the ground wearing necklaces strung from human teeth and mother of pearl. Altair Sales Barbosa of the Catholic University of Goiás recovered them, and the ornaments count among the oldest known jewelry in the Americas. Whoever made them was drilling and threading shell and bone with intention, for people they had decided should not go into the earth unadorned. Serranópolis today is a municipality of about eight thousand people spread across an area larger than some countries, running cattle and soybeans. Underneath and around all of it is one of the deepest human records on the continent.
