Virgulino Ferreira da Silva was born on 7 July 1897 at a farm called Passagem das Pedras, in a town that no longer answers to the name it had that day. It was Vila Bela then — Beautiful Village — a cattle settlement on the Pajeú river in the Pernambuco backlands. Forty-two years later, on 15 June 1939, the state governor Agamenon Magalhães signed the name away and replaced it with the one on the map today: Serra Talhada, cut ridge, after the escarpment above town that looks as though something sheared it to a plumb line. Virgulino had been dead for not quite eleven months. By then almost nobody called him Virgulino. They called him Lampião, and they still do.]]></description>
