Photo credit Meiaponte, CC BY-SA 4.0. Peel a strip of bark from a pau-papel and it lifts away in scales so fine they could pass for tissue - which is exactly what the name means, paper wood. The tree is small, rarely more than three metres, and it grows straight out of bare rock in only a handful of places on Earth: the Serra de Natividade in southern Tocantins, the Serra dos Pireneus, and here, along the long stone spine of the Serra Dourada in western Goiás. Tibouchina papyrus is the symbol tree of the state. It is also classified as vulnerable. Most of what stands between it and the cattle is a park whose boundaries almost nobody can point to.
