Photo credit Danielbs1916, CC BY-SA 4.0. The Tupi name is a description, not a label: yby'ababa, split earth. Anyone who has driven the road up from the Ceará plain understands the choice. The Serra da Ibiapaba does not rise the way a mountain range rises, gathering itself over foothills. It ends - abruptly, in a wall several hundred metres high that runs for two hundred kilometres north to south, as though the country had been cut and one half lifted.
