Colonel Van den Brinck marched out of Recife on 17 February 1649 with a force built to fight the way European armies fought - in ranks, on open ground, along the good coastal roads a serious enemy would obviously use - and he set his line to cover exactly those roads. Two days later the enemy arrived from the west instead, out of the wetlands and down through the Guararapes hills, having walked in on minor trails nobody on the Dutch side had thought to defend. What followed took several hours and effectively ended Dutch rule in Pernambuco.
