When the tide falls off the Schleswig-Holstein coast, roughly a third of the park's 4,400 square kilometres stops being sea and becomes a shining plain of silt and fine sand, firm enough to walk barefoot, cut by drainage creeks that branch like the veins of a leaf. In places along the North Frisian shore that plain runs out forty kilometres before it meets open water. Six hours later all of it is under the North Sea again. This is a landscape rebuilt from scratch every single day, and everything that lives here - worm, bird, seal, and the people on the islands and Halligen - has organised itself around that fact.
