You can step over the São Francisco River here. Up on the grassland of the Serra da Canastra, a short drive west of town, the river that will eventually water half the Brazilian Northeast surfaces as a spring you could block with a boot. It does not stay modest for long. Within a dozen kilometres it has gathered enough weight to throw itself off the edge of the plateau as the Casca d'Anta, a 186-metre waterfall that is the first of its life — and from there it runs north for more than 2,800 kilometres. São Roque de Minas is the town at the gate of all this, and it is arranged accordingly.
