São Jorge: Introduction

The village occupies a grid of red dirt streets on the western edge of a quartzite plateau in northeastern Goiás, and it has no traffic lights, no petrol station and no cash machine — the nearest of each sits 36 kilometres away in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. What São Jorge does have is a gate. Behind it lies Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, and almost everyone here makes a living from the people who come to walk through it.
