São Francisco River: Introduction

Photo credit Texugo, CC BY-SA 3.0. Amerigo Vespucci reached the mouth on 4 October 1501 and named the river for the saint whose feast day it was. The people already living along it had a name of their own — Opara. Five centuries later Brazilians mostly use a third one. They call it Velho Chico, Old Frank, the way you would talk about a difficult relative you cannot do without: the river that keeps the Northeast alive, that floods and shrinks and silts up, and that everyone in four states has an opinion about.
