Photo credit Johannes Mejer, Public domain. Twice a day the sea withdraws from the flats west of Hallig Suedfall and leaves a floor of grey-brown silt running out to the horizon. Walk it at low water and you find things with no business on a seabed: oak stumps, the round mouths of old wells, a low straight ridge that was once a dike. This was ploughed, taxed, lived-on land until the night of 15 or 16 January 1362, when a storm tide the Frisians remembered as the Grote Mandrenke - the Great Drowning of Men - came over the coast and took it. The place that went under is called Rungholt, and for six hundred years the argument about it has been the same one: was there really a town out there, or only a story people told about one?
