Photo credit CC BY-SA 3.0. A railway needed crossties and firewood, so in 1909 it planted a forest. The Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro laid out a plantation on the edge of Rio Claro and handed it to an agronomist named Edmundo Navarro de Andrade, who set about testing eucalyptus — fast-growing, hard-burning, entirely foreign. By 1914 he had brought in 144 species from Australia. The steam locomotives that justified the experiment are long retired, but the forest is still standing: 2,230 hectares of it, now a state forest carrying Navarro de Andrade's name, spilling across the boundary into neighbouring Santa Gertrudes.
