Somebody in Ribe dug a well around the year 705, and the timbers they lined it with are the reason the town can date itself so precisely. Tree rings put the settlement's founding between roughly 704 and 710, which makes Ribe older than the Danish kingdom that eventually claimed it, older than Christianity in Scandinavia, older than any other town in Denmark. The 1,300-year anniversary was celebrated in 2010. About 8,400 people live here now, in a compact grid of half-timbered houses on a river running west into the Wadden Sea, and the striking thing about the place is not its age but how visible that age still is.
