Carsten Jensen grew up in Marstal, where the arrangement was old and largely unspoken: the men went to sea, and the women stayed and waited to find out whether they were coming back. His 2006 novel We, the Drowned follows four generations of that bargain across nearly a hundred years and two world wars, and almost all of it happens in a town of about two thousand people on an island most visitors have to look up. Marstal is still called the skipper town, for the sheer number of sailors and captains it produced. Ærø, the island underneath it, is 88 square kilometres of gently rolling farmland wrapped in 167 kilometres of coast — a ratio that explains most of the history.
