Wooden hulls, tarred rope, vessels moored gunwale to gunwale — one careless galley stove and the whole basin goes up. So Ærøskøbing built a kitchen on shore instead. The cook house, a small whitewashed building from 1810, is where crews boiled their food until the ban lapsed in the middle of the 19th century. The Ærøskøbing Association helped restore it in 2001, and it now does exactly what it was built for: yachtsmen cook in it. That is the whole town in one building — a place that has kept its old houses by continuing to use them.

Ærøskøbing: Nine Hundred People and a Ferry
