Around 1720, Rømø held roughly sixteen hundred people and forty commanders — men qualified to take a ship north to the whaling grounds and bring it home again. Every February they crossed to Hamburg or Amsterdam to join their vessels, and the island ran itself until the fleets came back. What that trade paid for is still standing. There is a farmhouse with a sperm whale in the barn, a church hung with model ships, and at Juvre a fence whose posts are the jawbones of whales.
