Quixeramobim, Ceará: Introduction

Photo credit Eyder8794, CC BY-SA 4.0. In the 1830s, two families in this corner of the Ceará sertão were killing each other. The Maciéis and the Araújos traded ambushes and reprisals across the thorn scrub for years — a feud bloody enough that Euclides da Cunha would eventually set it down in Os Sertões as the backdrop to a larger tragedy. Into the Maciel family, on 13 March 1830, a son was born and named Antônio Vicente Mendes Maciel. He grew up quiet, serious and unusually bookish for a backland town, studying Latin and French with a grandfather who taught school here. Six decades later, barefoot in a ragged blue tunic with a wooden cross at his neck, the same man would be known across the northeast simply as Antônio Conselheiro — the Counselor. Quixeramobim is where he began.
