For years this beach in the municipality of Ipojuca was called Porto Rico — rich port — for the brazilwood shipped out of it. The name it carries now came later, and it came in code. Brazil outlawed the Atlantic slave trade on 7 November 1831, and then did almost nothing to enforce the law, a habit Brazilians named at the time: para inglês ver, for the English to see. Trafficking continued on a huge scale for another nineteen years. On this stretch of Pernambuco coast, Africans were landed hidden beneath crates of guinea fowl — galinhas-d'angola — and the arrival of a shipment was passed along the shore in a sentence that gave nothing away to an inspector and everything away to a buyer. Tem galinha nova no porto. There are new chickens in the port.]]></description>
