Three locomotives, three hundred and thirty wagons, one cargo. That is the standard composition on the Carajás railway, and its whole purpose is to arrive at a single place: a set of piers on the western shore of São Luís Island, jutting into São Marcos Bay, where the ore is tipped out and stacked in ridges the color of dried blood. Ponta da Madeira is not a city port. Nothing about it was designed for people. It is the ocean end of a machine that begins in the Amazon, and every dimension of it - the depth of the water, the length of the piers, the size of the ships that tie up - was chosen to keep that machine from ever having to stop.
