Piauí: Introduction

Photo credit OvoMesclado, CC0. Brazil was settled from the sea. Portuguese ships found the coast, built ports, and pushed inland reluctantly and late. Piauí happened backwards. Cattle drovers came up out of Bahia in 1674 looking for grass and water, established ranches deep in the interior, and only afterwards did anyone bother much about the shoreline. The result is a state shaped like a wedge with its point at the ocean: 251,529 square kilometres of territory, eleventh largest in Brazil, and just 66 kilometres of coastline - the shortest of any coastal state in the country. Everything important in Piauí faces inward.
