Frederico Peiró came here in 1896 for the limestone. He got it: kilns for burning quicklime, warehouses for the grain of the surrounding country, and eventually a railway station bearing his name, shipping the district's output down to São Paulo. What Peiró never knew was what the limestone country was made of. The same beds he quarried had been laid down at the close of the Cretaceous, and they were full of animals — titanosaurs the length of a house, armoured crocodile relatives, turtles, a frog. It would take another half-century, and a railway crew moving track, before anyone noticed.
