Boil it, fix the extract onto cloth, and Renaissance Europe would pay nearly anything for the result. The compound is brazilin; the tree is Paubrasilia echinata; and the country is named after it. Terra do Brasil meant the land of brazilwood, which makes Brazil one of the very few nations on earth to take its name from an export commodity. The Portuguese crown turned the harvest into a monopoly within a few years of landfall in 1500, and by the eighteenth century the cutting had worked through most of the standing stock. Pau Brasil National Park protects one of the fragments that survived, a short drive inland from the beaches where the trade began.
