Por Passos, por Minas, por Brasil. The motto is a pun that only lands in Portuguese, where *passos* means steps: by steps, through Minas, across Brazil. It is the kind of slogan a town adopts when it has made peace with being the way there rather than the place you were going. Passos has been playing that role since 1848, when the settlement that had grown up around a chapel dedicated to Senhor Bom Jesus dos Passos was made the seat of its own municipality, and it plays it still — a city of roughly 112,000 people sitting between the São Paulo state line and the vast blue sprawl of the Furnas Reservoir.
