Passos has been playing that role since 1848, when the settlement that had grown up around a chapel dedicated to Senhor Bom Jesus dos Passos was made the seat of its own municipality, and it plays it still — a city of roughly 112,000 people sitting between the São Paulo state line and the vast blue sprawl of the Furnas Reservoir.]]></description>
