Pará: Introduction

The word is Tupi, and the people who used it were describing something they knew well: at the mouth of the Amazon the river stops behaving like a river. It has tides. It has waves. Its freshwater plume pushes so far into the Atlantic that early European ships were drinking from the ocean before they had any idea where the land was. Vicente Yanez Pinzon reached that mouth in 1500 and could not see the far bank. Five centuries later, the state that took its name from the word is Brazil's second largest, 1.2 million square kilometres holding 8.1 million people, and the same geography still governs everything. Pará is where the Amazon empties. It is also, and not coincidentally, where nearly everything taken out of the Amazon has left.
