The story attached to the most photographed hill in the Chapada Diamantina is about an escape. In the nineteenth century an enslaved man called Pai Inácio fled after his love for a woman was discovered, and was cornered at the top of the sandstone tower that now bears his name. What he had with him, the telling goes, was an umbrella. He jumped rather than be shot, and he lived. Whatever really happened on that rock, the legend has outlasted every fortune made in this district — enough that a short film retold it in the 1980s. The hill stands at 1,170 metres inside the municipality of Palmeiras, Bahia, and people climb it at sunset to watch the light go orange across the plateau.
