Photo credit Frans Post, Public domain. In 1678 the governor of Pernambuco made Palmares an offer. Anyone born inside the community could keep their freedom and the crown would pardon the rest — provided they came down out of the hills to live nearer the Portuguese settlements, and handed back everyone who had escaped into Palmares from the sugar plantations. Ganga Zumba, the king, accepted. A younger man named Zumbi refused, on the grounds that a freedom bought with other people's bondage was no freedom at all. The quarrel split the largest community of self-liberated people ever to hold ground in the Americas, and it decided how that community would end.
