Ovelgönne Bread Roll: Introduction

Photo credit Arne Hückelheim, CC BY-SA 3.0. It weighs two and a half grams. It is thirty-five millimetres long, roughly the width of two fingers, burnt to the colour of slate, and it is broken in half. By any ordinary measure the Ovelgonne bread roll is a piece of rubbish - which is precisely what it was, thrown into a refuse pit in a clay bank near Buxtehude in the early Pre-Roman Iron Age and forgotten for something like two and a half thousand years. What makes it extraordinary is that it is not a lump. It is a shaped object: tapered at the ends, scored along the top, with a deliberate dimple pressed into its crust. It is the oldest surviving formed bakery product in Europe.
