It is a line from a Theodor Storm bedtime story, and linguists on this coast use it the way other people use a tuning fork. On Sylt it comes out "Ljucht, ual Muun, ljucht!" On Föhr and Amrum: "Locht, ual muun, locht!" On Helgoland, forty miles out in the North Sea: "Lochte, ool Muun, lochte!" Cross to the mainland marshes and the same boy shouts "Jucht, üülje moune, jucht!" These are not accents. They are the ten dialects of North Frisian, a language of Germany's northwest corner whose speakers can live within sight of one another and still need German to get through a complicated conversation.
