Seen from above, the walks through the central beds trace an A and an E — Ada and Emil, the couple who laid them out. It is a tender piece of design, and it stands in front of a house whose owner spent the 1930s writing to Nazi officials about how to remove Jews from Germany. Emil Nolde's home on a Frisian dwelling mound near the Danish border is a museum to his painting. Since 2019 it has also become, deliberately, a museum to the distance between what a man was and what he persuaded a country he had been.
