Montes Claros: Introduction

A geological fault rings the city at a depth of a kilometer and a half to two kilometers, producing near-continuous low-level tremors — usually too faint to register, occasionally not. On 19 May 2012 the strongest of them reached roughly 4.2, enough to rattle a city of several hundred thousand people who mostly did not know they lived on one. It is an odd foundation for the commercial capital of northern Minas Gerais, a place that started as a cattle grant and is now the fifth most populous municipality in the state.
