Photo credit Bunks, CC BY 3.0. On 28 April 1978 a pulp mill arrived at Monte Dourado by sea. Not the parts for a pulp mill - the mill itself, complete, built on a ship-shaped barge in a Japanese yard, towed across the Indian Ocean, around the Cape of Good Hope and up the Amazon into the Jari River, where it was floated over four thousand pilings driven into the riverbed and lowered onto them. A second barge carrying the power plant followed a few days behind. The whole convoy had left Japan at the beginning of February. It remains the strangest piece of industrial logistics ever attempted in the Amazon, and it belonged to one man: Daniel K. Ludwig, an American shipping magnate then among the richest people alive, who had decided that this stretch of forest would become the world's supply of paper.
