That would have been a minor curiosity on its own. What made it a story was the twenty-year-old who scored twice in the same match, wearing the same shirt, sharing the same surname. Mogi Mirim beat Macaé 3-1 that night, and Rivaldo — Ballon d'Or winner, World Cup champion of 2002, one of the finest footballers Brazil has ever produced — walked off having shared a scoresheet with his son Rivaldinho. He had come out of retirement to help the club he was running. It was not a nostalgia tour at some giant of the game. It was Mogi Mirim, a city of ninety-odd thousand in the interior of São Paulo state, and the reason Rivaldo cared enough to lace up again is that this is where his career had begun to work.
