Mandø: Introduction

It is a strip of gravel laid on the floor of the Wadden Sea, raised about seventy-five centimetres above the mud, and the North Sea takes it back twice a day. Drivers get roughly a twenty-minute window on each crossing, and the window shifts about three quarters of an hour later every day as the moon moves the tide. Wind can cancel it outright. Thirty-odd people live on the far end of that arrangement, on 7.63 square kilometres of dyked farmland, salt marsh and dune in the far southwest corner of Jutland, twelve kilometres from Ribe and a world away from anywhere.
