There is no outlet and no river to carry them away; the sun simply takes them, as much as a metre of depth a month, until the hollows between the dunes are dry white sand again and the fish that lived in them are gone. Then January comes, the rain returns, and roughly two-fifths of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park turns back into water. Nothing here is permanent except the arrangement that produces it: sand delivered by rivers, moved by wind, and sitting on a floor of rock that refuses to let the rain through.]]></description>
