Walk down into the dim vault under the mound near Kerteminde and what lies in front of you is a shape — a long, narrow, unmistakably boat-shaped stain in the sandy soil, its overlapping clinker planking still legible in the discolouration, its hull traced out by roughly two thousand iron rivets that stayed exactly where the wood around them dissolved. The vessel is gone. Its shadow is what survived, and its shadow is precise enough to measure: about twenty-two metres from stem to stern, three metres at the widest, a metre deep amidships and drawing only half a metre of water. A fast, shallow, coastal thing, built to be pulled up on a beach.
