Halligen: Introduction

Photo credit Public domain. Somewhere between five and twenty times a year, the sea walks in and takes the fields. The North Frisians call it Landunter - land under - and on the Halligen it is less a disaster than a season. Water climbs over the salt meadows, over the fence lines and the single road, until nothing is left of the island but a scatter of green mounds with houses on top, each one riding the grey North Sea like a moored ark. The cattle have already been walked up the slope. The kettle is already on. By the next tide the water slides back out through the Wadden Sea and leaves behind a film of silt a millimetre or two thick, which is, in the long run, the entire point.
