Photo credit VanessaRPF, CC BY-SA 4.0. Every centimetre of crystal inside the Gruta de Ubajara took roughly three years to form. Run that arithmetic across a stalactite the length of your arm and you arrive at a couple of centuries of dripping water, which is a useful thing to hold in your head while standing in the dark under the Serra da Ibiapaba. The cave sits in the flank of the escarpment in western Ceará, a few hundred metres below the plateau edge, and it is the reason a 6,288-hectare patch of forest and thorn scrub — the smallest of Brazil's national parks — exists at all.
