The ground splits into plates, the cerrado fades to the colour of old paper, and heat comes off bare quartzite in sheets you can see. Yet the streams inside Grão Mogol State Park keep running — in September, when nothing should. That contradiction, dependable water in an undependable climate, is why 28,404 hectares of northern Minas Gerais were walled off from everything else the region does with land.
