A hundred or so brand-new houses stood scattered at the four corners of the horizon. “The biggest of these was the hotel,” he wrote in Tristes Tropiques, “a square box of cement, with the look of an air-terminus or a miniature fort.” Goiânia had exactly one hotel that year. The French anthropologist was writing about the Grande Hotel, which had opened its doors on 23 January, and he meant none of it kindly.]]></description>
