You climbed through a small hatch, ducked, and found yourself at a round table in the middle of the universe. The heavens curved away in painted blue, more than a thousand gilded brass nail heads standing in for the stars, the constellations drawn as figures out of myth. Then the whole thing began to move. Down in the basement a waterwheel turned a train of worm gears so slowly that the sphere completed exactly one rotation a day, and the sky wheeled overhead at the speed of the real one. Outside, the same copper shell carried a map of the Earth. Duke Frederick III of Holstein-Gottorp had commissioned a machine that was a world outside and a sky within, and nobody in Europe had built anything like it.]]></description>
