Friedrichstadt: Introduction

At the Synod of Dort in 1618 and 1619, the Dutch Reformed Church settled its long quarrel over predestination against the Remonstrants - the followers of Jacobus Arminius, who held that God's grace was not simply assigned in advance. The losing side found itself preached against, legislated against and, in some cases, driven out. Several hundred kilometres northeast, a young duke read the news as an opportunity. Friedrich III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf needed capital, skills and a port, and he had marshland at the mouth of the Eider going spare. On 24 September 1621 he founded a town and offered the exiles something almost nobody in seventeenth-century Europe was offering: permission to believe what they liked.
