Photo credit Public domain. On 29 April 1945, RAF bombers came in low over the Sachsenwald east of Hamburg and destroyed a manor house. The intelligence behind the raid said Heinrich Himmler was hiding there. He was not. What the crews actually hit was the headquarters of the White Buses, the Swedish rescue operation led by Count Folke Bernadotte that was pulling Danish and Norwegian prisoners out of German concentration camps in the last weeks of the war. Red crosses were painted on the roof. The house was Friedrichsruh, and for seventy-four years before that morning it had been the country seat of the man who made Germany.
